Aqua Yoga Treatment in a SwimEx Pool for Spinal Injury Patients

Aug 6, 2014 9:19:04 AM / by SwimEx Blog

The Carolina Spine and Neurosurgery Center uses aqua yoga in a SwimEx pool to help rehabilitate spinal injury patients who couldn't even perform yoga on chairs. The non-weight bearing environment produces great results.

Carolina Spine and Neurosurgery Center

(from their website) Aquatic therapy introduces the patient to an environment of warm water (92-94 degrees), relaxing atmosphere for unloading the spine, pelvis, and lower extremity joints. The patient learns to do a variety of exercises utilizing the buoyancy of the water to assist movement and reduce pressure in water depths of 4, 5, and 6 foot.

The pool utilized wave formation with an enclosed paddle wheel producing water resistance to improve strength, balance, and flexibility with current strength up to 7.5 mph. Water is used in the initial stages of rehab to develop confidence and reduce limitation as we progress into a more normal exercise pattern on land. The overall goal is to develop an independent exercise program in the water and on land they can be followed through at public or private facilities.
